| Indication |
Isolate and identify potentially pathogenic organisms. Nasopharyngeal culture may reflect infection of tonsils, oropharynx, nasopharynx, and sinuses. Useful in identifying carriers of S. aureus and N. meningitidis.

Presence or absence of normal flora is usually reported. Normal flor of the nose includes S. epidermis, S. aureus, S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, S. pyogenes, M. catarrhalis, and Neisseria sp.
