It's a feeling many people can relate to at some point in their lives, and unfortunately all too often during the holiday season: hangover. Now, Scottish researchers have invented a chemical cleaner that can provide a magical cure to the headache, nausea and shaking associated with excessive drinking.

What's more, the discovery can also be an antidote to accidental drugs.

Researchers have invented a molecule that can attach itself to unwanted chemicals in the bloodstream and within minutes can clear out the invader.

The molecule, Bridion, created by a team from Schering Plough in Newhouse, Lanarkshire, has been used in trials with patients who have undergone anaesthesia and can remove a paralysing drug used in major surgery.

The new molecule works by forming a ring around the unwanted chemical, rendering it ineffective within three minutes, the time it takes the blood to circulate round the body. It is then excreted naturally, reports the Scotsman.

It's possible future treatments could also include removing alcohol from the bloodstream quickly from people who have drunk too much.

Bridion works specifically on the commonly used muscle relaxants, Rocuronium and Vecuronium, used to keep patients extremely still during major surgery such as hip operations.
