Greece to Enforce Total Smoking Ban in Public Places - Medindia
Greece is to impose a smoking ban in public places, the health ministry announced Wednesday, after previous partial-bans were ignored in what is one of Europe's heaviest smoking nations.

Two previous laws, forcing businesses, bars and restaurants to limit smoking to designated areas, were widely flouted.

The new total ban, which will also include a provision to raise the tobacco-purchasing age to 18, will be presented to the Greek parliament in June.

Around one in three 12-18 year olds have tried smoking, whilst one in ten is addicted, according to a 2007 survey.

The number of smokers in Greece has gone up ten percent in ten years, it also found, whilst many other developed nations are cutting back on cigarette smoking.

Britain, Ireland and France have already banned smoking in public places.

So if smoking and second hand smoke are deadly, Greeks should be the sickest bunch in the world after the Japanese, shouldn't they? Well, Greeks the second heaviest smokers in the world are the healthiest people in the European Union. Japanese the first biggest smokers in the world have one of the longest life expectancies. Don't take my word for it, google it up. This needs some splaining Lucy!

I can't believe that Greece, which has been in the EU for almost 30 years and is supposed to be a developed country, allows smoking everywhere and lets kids buy cigarettes. I was shocked to hear about dentists smoking while fixing your teeth, ashtrays in waiting rooms, people smoking in banks and supermarkets... That doesn't happen even here in Bosnia, and in Croatia they just passed a law of total smoking ban in all public places.

The constant smell of cigarette smoke is the most unpleasant aspect of an otherwise-beautiful place. In a village I have visited, the local dentist smokes while she cleans your teeth. Many aspects of Greek culture are charming, but this is not one of them.
