Hospitals in the Netherlands capital have increased security in paediatric wards after three babies were found with broken bones under mysterious circumstances , Dutch media reported Monday.

Two of the babies were found last week at the city's Free University (VU) hospital and another at the Academic Medical Centre (AMC).

The incident at the AMC was uncovered Thursday, when a six-month-old baby who had been in hospital since birth was found with unexplained fractures to its ribs after a routine X-ray.

Doctors said the breaks could have been two or three weeks old.

The VU reported its incidents Wednesday last week, but released no details.

Other hospitals announced increased security, closing off obstetrics and paediatric wards to visitors and setting up closed-circuit television.
