Vaccine For Meningococcal Disease Trialled In Western Australia

by Malathi Raman on Oct 31 2006 12:54 PM

A vaccine which could protect children from meningococcal disease is being trialled by researchers in Perth. Until now immunization against the disease has not been available.

The researchers, from the Vaccine Trials Group at the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research and Princess Margaret Hospital for Children, hope that the vaccine will be effective against the meningococcal B strain which is the most common. It is responsible for 80% of the affected cases in Western Australia.

Toddlers aged between 18 and 36 months and adolescent children between 10 and 12 years of age are required for the research project
