A young 18 year old who got her breasts pierced for her 18th birthday suffered near fatal infection in her left breast that forced doctors to surgically remove her left breast. Surgeons had to remove lymph nodes and infected skin right up to Stephanie Edington’s collar bone last week at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis where she remained hospitalized.
Doctors who examined Edington diagnosed her to with gas gangrene or necrotizing fasciitis a very rare condition which develops as a result of rapid bacterial infection which destroys tissues in the body. Apparently the piercing on her breasts created an entry point for the bacteria explained doctors who attended to her. Stephanie was later also noted to be diabetic which left her more prone to infection. It is only the third recognized case in the world of gas gangrene having occurred near the breast said doctors at the hospital.Stephanie is presently on rigorous antibiotic treatment after having undergone three surgeries. Eventually she would have to face many more surgical procedures to eventually reconstruct her left breast.
Traumatized by the whole episode Stephanie longs to come out of the ordeal she is going through and winces at the thought of reactions of the public in general and the questions she would have to face after coming out of hospital. Her mother voiced that her entire family is still reeling under shock after this happened to Stephanie and said they are now worried for her and her future.
