Risks of Suicide among Black Americans

by Medindia Content Team on Nov 1 2006 8:31 PM

The myth that Blacks are less inclined to commit suicide as compared to Whites was dispelled by a novel study that built statistics about suicide among black Americans. Scientists from the University of Michigan said that 4.1% of Black Americans do attempt suicide, and taking ones own life happens to be the 11th leading cause of death in the United States.

Researchers discovered that nearly one in 10 black Americans suffer from suicidal thoughts. Further they found that Black Americans suffering a psychiatric disorder were eight times prone to attempting suicide, and the risk of suicide went up higher with a combination of psychiatric disorders existing in a person.
