Pre-implantation Genetic Haplotyping- A Test to Sift Unhealthy Embryos Records Success

by Savitha C Muppala on Nov 14 2006 7:05 PM

London: Embryonic testing based on the ‘survival of the fittest’ theory, which helps in detecting unhealthy embryos, with a motive to nurture the healthy ones, has borne fruit. Now, babies have been born to a British Couple, the first in UK, after successfully employing this method of embryonic testing.

This method proved a blessing to the parents in question, who carried genes that made their offsprings highly prone to a condition called cystic fibrosis, a genetic condition from which their first born is afflicted. To ensure the condition doesn’t repeat for the second time, the couple had resorted to this foolproof method. Called pre-implantation genetic haplotyping (PGH), the test effectively scans embryos for nearly 6000 conditions.
