by Medindia Content Team on Nov 27 2006 12:14 PM

Ohio-based HoneyBaked Foods Inc. has recalled their turkeys and ham products voluntarily due to suspected contamination of Listeria affecting over 47,000 pounds of their products. It happened only a day after Thanksgiving. The company said that the meat might be tampered with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes that could be dangerous for those with weakened immune systems.

The company added that it had recalled all the products that were sold between September 5th and November 13th through online shopping, catalogues and retail outlets in four Toledo locations. Products include packages of sliced & glazed fully cooked whole ham, sliced and glazed fully cooked smoked boneless turkey breast, sliced and glazed cooked boneless turkey breast, and sliced & glazed fully cooked half ham.

The severity of the disease caused by the Listeria Bacterium varies with age, health condition and site of infection. The disease is usually common in elderly people and children with weaker immune systems such as cancer patients and HIV carriers and pregnant women - it is said that the bacterium can be fatal to the unborn child.

US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has warned public confirming the high-risk to human health. Fortunately, there are no reports of any person suffering from illnesses due to consumption of the contaminated meat products.
