Squabbles put overseas doctors’ agenda on the back burner

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has said that the scheme proposed to evaluate overseas trained doctors, has not made much progress.

In July, a scheme was made public by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) and was planned to be formalized by December; this was thought to be need of the hour especially after a furore at Bundaberg Hospital, involving a foreign doctor and the death of 17 patients.

AMA president Dr Mukesh Haikerwal said, "Each state agrees there is a need for universal national standards of a higher level, but they can't agree on which one to take - they would prefer it to be their own. The states have to get bigger than that and get over that and come up with a scheme that will provide confidence to the Australian public."
