More South Africans are coming forward to seek counseling and undergo screening for HIV, as a reaction to rising HIV figures, the Department of Health has reported.

It is estimated that nearly four million people have utilized the screening services since 2000, thanks to the awareness initiatives that has encouraged people to ascertain their status. In 2005/06, nearly 1.7-million people underwent the pre-HIV test counseling and 80% of them undertook voluntary HIV screening. The figures for 2004/05 showed that nearly one million participants were counseled and 866,000 screened for HIV.

The executive director of the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) confirmed that research to produce an Aids vaccine had made considerable progress. Professor Barry Schoub, during the inauguration of the NICD centre at Johannesburg said, "There's a lot of intensive research and we are hoping for some breakthrough in the near future."
