People are becoming exceedingly health conscious thus there is a noted reduction in the consumption of alcohol among the UK population. It’s a known fact that moderate consumption of alcohol reduces the risk of heart ailments but it’s not very safe for any health professional to recommend daily alcohol consumption.

One of the leading health professional says,” I never advocate unrestrained intake. My recommendations are for moderate drinking – with food – of wines that have a high concentration of the plant chemicals called procyanidins.”

Recently, the WHO reports that the ill effect (disease and conditions) of alcohol consumption is almost equivalent to that of tobacco. Thus what is important is to realize the limits of drinking alcohol, may be a drink with meals is fine because it has a moderate effect but care should be taken to resist the refills. The health status of the individual is to be kept in mind to decide the amount of consumption. Apart from which the recommendation by the Government has shown a decrease.

The amounts of alcohol supplied by a few beverages are:

½ pint of beer: 3.5%
175 ml wine: 14%

Heavy drinking is defined by 6 units for women and 8 for men.

But alcohol has to be restricted in certain states such as pregnancy and people involving in on the counter medication, which might react with the alcohol without the knowledge of the individual.

According to National statistics reports by 2004 the rate of heavy drinkers suddenly reduced to 39% and 35% by 2005. It also shows that women consumers may have increased. However another report contradicts to the rate of women consumers showing an increase. Presently around 22% of women and 31% of men have drunk heavily last week.

Still the statistics only describe the entire population what really matters is the individuals of society. So beware!
