Mother and babies face danger at the wards due to insufficient doctors, midwives or due to lack of wards. At times the consultants are too busy to take time off their meetings, according to a recent study.
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists conducted a study according to which during 10% of the emergencies during childbirth, the midwives do not inform the consultants, following their own guidelines.Not many consultants were going for ward rounds either, which is one of the guideline they have to follow.
According to Department of Health spokesman, there is an increase in the number of consultants by 40% and midwives by 41% since 1997.
He also said, "Maternal mortality is as low as it has ever been, as are the rates of infant mortality. Giving birth is safer now than ever before."
"The shape of the NHS is changing as are expectations of how maternity services are delivered. There is obviously a debate to be had around how these needs are met."
