Jamba Juice Co. Cautions Consumers On Smoothie Contamination

San Francisco based Jamba Juice Co., warned consumers about the potentially harmful bacterium that could have contaminated smoothies having strawberries. The company said that the warning is applicable to all the strawberry smoothies that have been purchased from the stores in Arizona, Southern Nevada and Southern California within the period of November 25 – December 1 2006.

The warning was announced after one of its suppliers, Cleugh’s Frozen Foods of Salinas, said that it had found the bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes in one of the company’s frozen strawberries.

Listeria Monocytogenes can result in fatal infections in adults, young children and those with sensitive immune systems apart from causing fever, nausea, headaches, diarrhea and so on. It can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths when this bacterium infects pregnant women and they have to be more cautious.

To conclude, the company officials said that no reports of confirmed illnesses among consumers have been reported so far.
