In a case of dubious consolation, nineteen persons infected with AIDS will be given $2.5 million in compensation, making this Chinas most moneyed lawsuit. This money should provide some relief to the affected and their families as most of them are living in poverty.
Fifteen persons were contaminated via transfusions of blood during operations carried out at a provincial hospital of northern China in 2004. Three of them passed the virus to their spouses while one parent infected its child.The blood was got from illegal blood vendors; a married couple who have since died, who had supplied it to three members of the hospital staff. They have been sentenced to various jail terms.
