The Madhya Pradesh government is considering setting up a medical and health university to promote the study of various systems of medicine, Health Minister Ajay Vishnoi said Tuesday.

"The government will soon start the process of seeking permission from the Medical Council of India for opening the university," Vishnoi told IANS, adding that the idea came up at a recent workshop on Indian medical systems.

"The need for introducing subjects like yoga and pranayam in the school curriculum was also discussed," he added.

The three-day workshop, in which experts from different states including Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Chhattisgarh participated, concluded here Monday.

"The experts discussed how AYUSH (ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, unani, siddha and homeopathy) could be used along with allopathy," he said.

Other recommendations of the Chintan Shivir that were under the government's consideration include setting up a state-level AYUSH research institute and making medicine available in tribal areas. "These too will be implemented soon", he said.
