Five more people succumbed to Rift Valley Fever in Garissa district, taking the death toll to 23. Confirmation to this effect has been made by the North Eastern Provincial Medical Officer of Health Dr Omar Ahmed.

The Medical officer has cautioned the public to seek medical attention as quickly as possible, as the most important reason for the spread of the disease is due to lack of awareness. But local councillor Bishar Gurre said that lack of a well equipped medical team and good medicines was the reason behind the spread of the disease.

“I urge the Government to speedily take the needed medicine and personnel to all the health centers and dispensaries in the district to stop the spread of the disease,” Gurre told the residents. He also advised the people to avoid intake of animal meat and milk to contain the spread of infection. He also said that anybody wishing to slaughter an animal should first seek permission from the veterinary department , to be sure the animal is free of the virus.
