New York: A new study has shown a connection between gaining weight during middle age and the risk of breast cancer after menopause. While there is little doubt that overweight is a definite risk factor for breast cancer, there seems to be convincing evidence that weight gain in adult life is an indicator of the enhanced risk of the disease.
Yet, not much was known about the consequences of weight gain in adulthood and its connection with breast cancer. Dr. Daikwon Han of Morehead State University in Kentucky and colleagues studied this feature in detail among 1,166 women with breast cancer and 2,105 who did not suffer the disease.The finding showed that post menopausal women, who had gained more than 60 pounds between the ages of 20 and menopause, stood a 70% chance of suffering breast cancer as compared to women who had gained less than 20 pounds. Further, the chances of suffering breast cancer was four percent for every 11 pounds gained during adulthood. The results show that the timing of weight gain has an influence on determining breast cancer risk than other factors.
