Moderate alcohol consumption has been touted as the magic potion for cardiovascular health. Its benefits seem to offset the risk of stroke as well. Now, there seems to be one more reason to indulge in moderate drinking. Scientists have revealed that men suffering high blood pressure could reduce the risk of heart attack by consuming two alcoholic drinks or wine on a daily basis.

A recent insight has indicated the far reaching health benefits of consuming one or two alcoholic drinks or wine daily. Many other studies have also substantiated the benefits of alcohol in moderation which is capable of elevating the levels of protective cholesterol in the blood, and bringing down the risk of heart attack. But this is perhaps the first academic insight into the benefits of alcohol (in moderation), for patients suffering high blood pressure.

The study spearheaded by Joline Beulens of Wageningen University in the Netherlands analyzed the data of 11,711 men suffering high blood pressure. The participants answered a questionnaire every four years about their consumption of beer, red wine, white wine and spirits. Details about heart attacks, cardiovascular disease and strokes were also noted. The finding revealed that the risks of suffering a heart attack for men with hypertension, was much when they consumed one or two drinks a day.

Miss Beulens said: "This was the first study to our knowledge that examined the risk of heart attacks among men with high blood pressure who drank moderately. Men diagnosed with hypertension probably get a lot of advice on how to change their lifestyle, physical activity and diet. This study indicates that if they drink alcohol in moderation they may not need to change their drinking habits."

On the same breath, she cautioned men not to indulge in more than two drinks a day, as this could increase their blood pressure and consequently the risk of heart attack.
