What’s Luck Got to Do With Cancer?

by Medindia Content Team on Jan 3 2007 4:20 PM

Amid all the talk about going the extra mile to make lifestyle changes towards a cancer free and a healthier tomorrow, a survey has revealed the disappointing negativism prevailing in the mind-set of people about the risks of cancer.

Nearly 27% of Britons who responded to the survey by Cancer research, blamed fate behind the cancer affliction, and vehemently denied the strength of personal efforts in preventing the disease.

Dr Lesley Walker, director of information at Cancer Research UK, explaining the importance of education in lowering the risks to cancer said “It is alarming that such a large percentage of the British population do not realize that half of all cases of cancer can be prevented by lifestyle changes. We can give people information about how to do this but it is seriously worrying that so many people think cancer is down to fate."

The underprivileged areas of Britain and people over 65 seemed to hold ‘fate’ responsible for cancer.
