Quebec and New Brunswick are facing one of the worst gastroenteritis epidemics that has thrown more than 35 hospitals out of gear, with patients coming in droves for relief. The infection triggers diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach cramps, which can continue for a few days but seldom endangers life.
Nearly 29 health-care centers offering facilities in the greater Montreal area have reported the viral outbreak. Dr. Joseph Portnoy, at the helm of the Jewish General Hospital’s ‘infection control division’ believes the only way to contain the spread of this infection, is adopting hygiene which includes, thorough washing of the hands.The gastroenteritis attack is believed to be the handiwork of a resistant strain of the Norwalk virus, which needs no introduction, having left its stamp of destruction in Europe, Japan and the US.
"It's dehydration, and its weakness and if someone's already weak and hardly moving it makes them move less and they're subject to all kinds of complications like pneumonia and other things." Dr. Joseph Portnoy said.
