Thailand- The lethal H5N1 virus has struck in Northern Thailand; health officials have confirmed the outbreak, which has led to the death of more than 100 ducks in Phitsanulok province.
Nirand Uaebumrungsut, a veterinarian with the Agriculture Ministry's Department of Livestock Development said, "We have found the H5N1 virus in the ducks and we have ordered around 2,100 ducks in the area to be killed."The place in question is inhabited by many wild and free-range ducks. The department is picking up birds within a 3 mile radius of the outbreak, to put them to death.
Health Minister Mongkol Na Songkhla said, 'Although we have not found a case in many months, we have asked governmental health organizations to help monitor cases of flu, coughs and pneumonia, especially among people who have come into contact with birds.'
So far bird flu has claimed 17 human lives in Thailand. Health officials have cautioned the public to protect themselves during the winter months, which makes people vulnerable to infections.
