A new study reported in Tuesday’s issue of Canadian Journal Emergency Medicine, suggests that injuries from Knives & Guns have accounted to over 3% (40,000) of 1.2 million emergency visits in Ontario trauma care between 2002 and 2003.
The study Researchers at the Toronto-based Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) looked at the gunshots and knife wounds in Ontario's 180 hospitals between April 1, 2002 and March 31, 2003, found that 46 of the gun-related incidents and 2,594 of the stabbings were classified as assault, rest of the injuries from guns or knives were accidents, self-inflicted or described as 'intent unknown.' Moreover, it was found that the patients admitted in the emergency were mostly young men between the ages of 15 and 24.The overall deaths in Ontario from gunshot wounds and stabbings during that year accounted to 56 (26 deaths from knives and 30 deaths from guns).
The team said that, given the numbers and extent of the problem, it warrants further research and we are planning to follow the incidence of penetrating wounds to see if trends persist.
