Physical and Sexual Assault of Inmates at NHS Units

by Medindia Content Team on Jan 17 2007 3:28 PM

It was reported that in community homes at Sutton and Merton, the inmates were abused physically and sexually by the staff. This was revealed after a year long investigation by the Health Care commission.

The report of the commission revealed the pathetic living conditions of the inmates. These care centres have people who have different kind of disabilities. Some of them do not possess the right kind of mental health. They were under nourished and were let out for activities only for four hours a week. The management has to be blamed for this condition.

When the reasons were analyzed, it was found that the staff did not possess the necessary education and training to handle their inmates. There was always a shortage of staff and there is no efficient and effective supervision.

The Health Care Commission has prepared 25 suggestions and expected a reply and action plan from these community homes who are given nine weeks of time to prepare their rejoinder.
