Diabetic Patients Get a Reprieve

A drug that has been tested in Australia for Type 2 Diabetes appears to have a twin benefit. It not only helps them to bring their blood sugar under control but also helps them to lose weight.

This was disclosed by Stephen Twigg who is an associate Professor with the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital at Sydney. Currently this drug has been under trial on patient volunteers.

Adequate insulin is not produced by the pancreas in type 2 diabetes. The general mode of action of medicines administered in such cases is to let very little sugar into the bloodstream. Besides this, sugar is also constantly moved to the muscles from the blood stream.

But the new drug works in such a way so as to increase the production of insulin by pancreas. This drug is in an injectable form and its efficacy has been proved by the present trials. A significant loss of weight in patients was also observed. Doctors aver that right diet and exercise is needed to keep the insulin levels at bay.

Though United States has approved this drug, there are some more formalities to be completed in Australia before it reaches the market.
