The Psyche Behind Drug Commercials

by Medindia Content Team on Jan 31 2007 2:18 PM

Advertisements play a vital role in the life of common man. They are intended to boost the sale of any product from a small toy to a big automobile. When it comes to promoting drugs through commercials, the campaigns are so credible that the consumers go for it even if they don’t need them.

This was revealed in a survey conducted by a group of researchers under Dominick L Frosch of University of California – Los Angeles Department of Medicine. This group has arrived at a few interesting conclusions after studying many commercials.

According to them, majority of the advertisements do a vigorous selling of the drug; a few of them indicate the risk factors and causes in nebulous terms. Life style changes have never been attributed to any sickness. Only a few of them relate that as an alternate to medicines. Physical activity has been demonstrated in almost all the advertisements which are very encouraging. The results about the use of a particular drug have been exaggerated from a social approval angle. This study feels that the pharma companies should exercise caution in the content of the advertisement too.

Reacting to this study, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturer’s Association said that the advertisements increase the awareness about a disease and its treatment among the people.
