A Young Girl Loses Her Leg Due to Surgeon’s Carelessness

Bhubaneswar: A 12-year-old girl was allegedly operated on her leg instead of her polio-afflicted hand in Orissa's coastal district of Jajpur, some 100 km from here, the patient's father complained.

The girl was a victim of an unusual case of polio affecting the hand, but the surgeons on Saturday operated upon Laxmipriya's right leg instead of her right hand, alleged Seshadev Ghadai, the girl's father, a resident of Mantira village.

He said the doctors continued with the surgery despite his daughter's repeated pleas that the operation was being carried out in the wrong place.

"It was just a confusion," District Collector Arabinda Padhi, who inquired into the incident, said. The girl had polio deformity on both her hand and leg although the problem with the leg was minor, he added.

However, a doctor claimed the girl's arm and leg on the right side were affected by cerebral palsy.

"We did what was essentially required," said S.L. Gupta, the surgeon who operated on the girl.

Laxmipriya was operated in a free polio operative camp organised jointly by the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and a Gujarat-based non-governmental organisation PNR Society at the Jajpur government hospital.
