Shimla: Doctors in Himachal Pradesh claim to have successfully carried out a hip replacement for a 97-year-old woman.

Shakunthala Devi had slipped and broken her hipbone in a village in Kangra valley, 220 km from here, last month. Though her age was not conducive to a hip replacement, the doctors agreed to undertake the risk at the patient's plea.

'A day after the operation, the patient was made to sit up.. In a day or two, she would be made to walk with the help of a walker and within a week we hope she will be able to walk on her own,' said S.M. Mehta, the doctor who carried out the operation at the Tanda Medical College, 200 km from here.

'The surgery lasted 90 minutes and the hipbone was replaced with the help of bipolar technique,' he added.
