Suicide Rates in Children Soar

by Jyothsna on Feb 6 2007 1:58 PM

According to a latest Government data, there is an alarming rise in suicides in youth population. Health authorities feel that this could be linked to the plummeting sale of antidepressants.

This data from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also indicated that youth in their late teens resorted to suicides more. A few years back, US Food and Drug Administration had issued a black box warning on the antidepressants that these drugs could incite a suicidal behavior. The decline in availability of antidepressants could have escalated the rate of suicides in these children.

According to Dr John March, a psychiatry professor from Duke University, an exhaustive report on this issue is needed from CDC to corroborate the link between anti depressants and suicides. Some specialists from the mental health feel that suicide prevention measures which include drugs and counseling will go a long way in combating this issue.
