Spanish Fashion Show Rejects Five Models as too Thin

by VR Sreeraman on Feb 12 2007 6:15 PM

A top Spanish fashion show, the Pasarela Cibeles, has rejected five models from its team of 69 for being too thin, the show’s nutritionist said.

"Some of the girls were rejected due to a very low body mass index of 16 - the equivalent of being 1.80 meters and weighing less than 50 kg," said Susana Monereo, who sets the standards for the show with two other doctors.

Although some models reach the body mass index and are considered healthy, they look too thin, she said late Sunday.

If the Cibeles organisation allows the show, "it could exert negative influences on the population in general and cause problems related to anorexia," Monero added.

The Madrid show was the first in the world to exclude extremely thin models in a bid to reduce slimming disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.
