Vasectomy Linked to Dementia

by Jyothsna on Feb 14 2007 12:04 PM

Scientists of Northwestern University in Chicago claim that men who have undergone vasectomy may be at a risk of a specific type of dementia. This study was published in Cognitive and Behavioural Neurology.

This research was conducted on 106 men. Out of this, 25 developed a dementia called primary progressive aphasia (PPA) who had also undergone vasectomy. According to the chief scientist of this study Sandra Weintraub, this finding does not necessarily mean that vasectomy leads to PPA, it merely underlines the risk factors involved.

PPA is a condition characterized by difficulty in understanding and remembering words which lead to difficulty in communicating.

The scientists also aver that vasectomy may be associated with a different kind of dementia known as fronto-temporal dementia. Difficulty in judging, unusual behavior and personality changes are some of the symptoms associated with this disorder.
