In the United States, FDA and Centers for Disease Control are trying to verify if there is a link between salmonella infection and peanut butter. Around one hundred cases of salmonella infection have been reported across 37 states.

Salmonella are a group of bacteria that is responsible for causing fever, stomach pain and diarrhea. In United States alone, 40,000 cases and 600 deaths are reported every year. Generally these infections settle down in 5-7 days and in extreme cases dehydration and infection of the intestine occurs. Currently experts are looking for a strain called Salmonella tennessee.

Chris Kircher of ConAgra Foods Inc. who are the makers of peanut butter reveals that peanut butter manufactured in their company undergoes a random testing of a jar in each production line and have not found salmonella since 2004.
