Bridgepoint Health at Toronto, Canada has been closed to patients and visitors after an outbreak of Norwalk virus. It is stated that at least fifty staff members of the hospital and many patients have been affected by this virus.
The Norwalk virus is responsible for causing disorders affecting the intestine resulting in severe vomiting, headaches, fatigue and sometimes low grade fevers. The symptoms may last for two to three days but are severely pronounced in children, older people and immuno compromised population.Norwalk virus causes viral gastroenteritis, acute nonbacterial gastroenteritis resulting due to food poisoning. There is no therapy for this disease except to maintain fluid balance in the body. It generally settles down in a couple of days with no long term side effects.
The virus is highly infectious and spreads fast in closed spaces through contaminated water or food. People have been advised to be cautious about their eating habits especially sea food and salads and to maintain a good hygiene.
