Prolactin Comes to the Aid of MS Sufferers

by Savitha C Muppala on Feb 21 2007 8:36 PM

A hormone secreted during pregnancy, necessary to get the body ready for breast feeding may come to the aid of those ailing from multiple sclerosis.

Scientists have found that prolactin, generated in plenty during pregnancy is equipped to remedy the injured nerve cells which cause the symptoms of MS. This finding could mean better treatments to solve the degenerative effects of the disease.

The finding came to light after Canadian scientists drew a parallel between pregnant mice and virgin mice and the effects of prolactin on the formation of myelin.

This has sparked hope amongst scientists about a possible remedy for MS, and trials are expected to begin soon on humans.
