Rats Feast on Dead Patient in Kolkata Hospital

by VR Sreeraman on Feb 22 2007 6:57 PM

A state-run city hospital witnessed protests on Wednesday after a dead patient's body was handed over to his relatives with an ear and nose nibbled away by rats.

TV reports said Bishom Roy, a man above 60, was admitted to Shambhunath Pandit Hospital a few days back with diabetes. He died subsequently but his body had to be kept in the hospital morgue since his sons lived in Patna.

While the deceased was kept in the morgue after payment of a "fee" to the hospital employees, when the body was handed over to his sons it was found with ear and nose nibbled away by rats.

Soon a mob led by the youth wing of the Congress started protesting inside the hospital premises and even blackened the face of the hospital superintendent.

Later police arrived and controlled the situation.

The same hospital was in news in November 2005 after a female patient's eye was bitten by ants. The patient had died later.

"Despite sustained protests over the mismanagement and shocking state of affairs at the hospital, things did not change. It is clear now that the state government wants to hand over the hospital to a private party," said Congress leader Nirbed Roy.

He also threatened a big agitation if the government did not improve things in the hospital.
