Six Medicos in Libyan HIV Case Plead Not Guilty

by Jyothsna on Feb 26 2007 2:00 PM

On the fourth hearing of the HIV case in Libya involving five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor, the medicos pleaded not guilty. They also claimed that they were tortured brutally to give false testimonies.

The six medicos were sentenced to jail in 1999 when they were accused of starting an HIV epidemic in a hospital in Benghazi in Libya. But according to scientists, the infections have begun much before the arrival of these medicos. But Libya was defiant and said that they would sort this issue internally.

Two Libyan officials are said to have beaten and tortured the accused to accept a crime which has not been committed by them. The next hearing on this case is scheduled for March 11th.
