UAE Introduces Cervical Cancer Vaccine

An education programme on cervical cancer prevention and the new vaccine Gardasil was conducted in the American Hospital Dubai. This was organized by a team of doctors from Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the hospital and was attended by 130 women.

Dr Rihab Awad of the hospital insisted on a routine screening procedure for cervical cancer like the pap tests once a year. Any aberration detected in cervix can be treated with a simple and painless procedure.

Next to breast cancer, cervical cancer is the common cause of death among women across the world. Human papilloma virus causes cancer of the cervix. The new vaccine Gardasil targets the types 6, 11, 16 and 18 of pailloma virus. Of these, HPV type 16 and 18 are responsible for 75% of cases.

In the Middle East, UAE is the first nation to have got sanctions for this vaccine from the ministry of health in November 2006. Gadasil can be administered to girls from nine years which would develop, toughen and augment resistance to cervical cancer.
