by Medindia Content Team on Feb 28 2007 7:46 PM

Girls in Massachusetts between 9 and 18 will be eligible for a free cervical cancer vaccine of Governor Deval Patrick’s new proposal goes through.

The shot though would not be a mandatory one though.

The plan was unveiled on Tuesday in terms of a new budget and includes funding for a new rotavirus vaccine as well which would be for infants. Another inclusion in the proposal is a bacterial meningitis vaccine for children.

Patrick states that the new investments would save lives and reduce future treatment costs.

This would make Massachusetts only the second state to endorse the cervical cancer vaccine behind Texas and Governor Rick Perry who is still facing criticism over his executive order to mandate the vaccine.
