Fired HIV-infected Soldiers to Get Back Their Jobs

by Savitha C Muppala on Mar 8 2007 11:01 AM

Mexico City- Mexico's Defense Services will be bound by a Supreme Court order that will require them to re-instate HIV-infected soldiers who were fired due to their health condition.

Last week the Supreme Court enforced that the armed forces cannot discharge soldiers and naval officers with HIV or AIDS. They could be discharged only if they were found to be medically unsuitable for work.

Senior officials in the army and navy have gone through all 11 cases presented before the Court; the defense ministry will re-admit the living claimants.

"We will re-enlist any persons the court determines should be reinstated to active service," the defense ministry said.

The armed forces have also reiterated that they will enable medical treatment to HIV-infected soldiers.
