According to a study, diabetic women taking Actos are reported to be more susceptible to bone fractures. This was announced by Japan’s pharma giant, Takeda Pharmaceuticals who had conducted a study on this drug. A similar note of caution was issued a few weeks back by Glaxo Smithkline also.
The study was conducted for more than three years on 15,500 people. Actos which is generically known as pioglitazone were given to women in this study. It was found that there were 1.9 broken bone cases for every one hundred patients as against 1.1 cases of fractures in women who were given a placebo.The common fractures involved are that of hands, forearms, wrists, feet, legs and ankle. It was also found that men who were taking this drug did not suffer from any bone fractures. Jocelyn Gerst, spokeswoman from Takeda said that they are trying to figure out if there is a relationship between osteoporosis and pioglitazone.
