Abu Dhabi: The latest statistics by the Ministry of Health (MoH), United Arab Emirates has revealed 645 cases of AIDS at the end of 2006 in the country, media reported Wednesday.

"Only a few cases were reported recently. We could say AIDS cases are not increasing significantly," Ali Shukur, Under-secretary of the Ministry of Health was quoted as saying.

Shukur admitted that the social stigma attached to the fatal transmissible disorder was impeding to collect the accurate data of the AIDS patients.

We have engaged the private diagnostic centres to report to the MoH about any detected HIV/AIDS case, he said, adding the registration of was 90 percent accurate.

A committee has been formed to create awareness about the disease and help removing the social stigma associated with it, he added.

A latest report of the World Health Organization (WHO) showed that the UAE had one of the lowest numbers of reported AIDS cases in the world over the past few years.
