Cigarette Packs to Carry Graphic Warnings

by VR Sreeraman on Mar 14 2007 8:17 PM

Pictures of corpses, cancerous mouths and the caption 'your smoking kills babies' would be displayed on packets of tobacco products from June to dissuade people from consuming them, Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said here Tuesday.

He said the current warning, "cigarette smoking is injurious to health", has lost its teeth and the new warning would help the cause better.

All tobacco products like gutkha and chewing tobacco pouches would display the message "tobacco causes a slow and painful death".

India is home to over 200 million tobacco users and losses thousands of people due to diseases related to its consumption. The health ministry has allocated Rs.400 million for anti-tobacco initiatives during 2007-08.
