The Myth Called Health Insurance

by Jyothsna on Mar 23 2007 11:05 AM

In the United States, having a health insurance does not seem to help people when in need. This was reported in a study undertaken nationwide. This study was funded by W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Missouri Foundation for Health.

The Access Project of Boston has reported the faults of health insurance in a study called "The Illusion of Coverage". According to this study, high co-payments and deductibles, cumbersome and complicated insurance policies and routine denial of claims are few factors that continue to harass people. Financial security and economic stability of a family can be challenged by medical debt.

The group had listed its findings after interviewing 45 people in seven states. The people who had been interviewed had accumulated a huge debt despite having health insurance. The finding sought for clearer rules and standards of accountability for health insurers.

The increase of insurance premiums has resulted in people opting for insurance plans with five-figure deductibles, co-insurance or less-comprehensive coverage. This will have an impact on health-access and financial consequences.
