Growing Older Has Its Own Positive Effects Too

by Jyothsna on Mar 26 2007 11:01 AM

According to a research conducted by Dr Michael Kisley, a psychologist from the University of Colorado in the US, older people have a more positive outlook towards life than young people. These findings are reported in the journal Psychological Science.

More than one hundred and fifty participants took part in this study. They were asked to view different images reflecting positive, neutral and negative aspects of life. The viewing was restricted to a very short time. They were asked to classify these images and their brain reaction was observed.

It was found that while older people were inclined to give equal importance to emotionally positive information, the younger group stressed more on emotionally negative information.

According to Dr Michael Kisley, this sort of attitude goes a long way in decision making. He also wished to know if this type of outlook was unconscious and gradual with ageing or a conscious attempt on the part of the elders to change their world view.

The answer to this poser may highlight on the wellbeing of older people in general and for people who are subjected to the adversities of life like the loss of one’s spouse or major health issues like cancer etc.
