San Diego – Obesity is back in the news with one more ailment added to its list of exploits – Colon Cancer. People who are obese carry an enhanced risk of colon cancer.

Scientists from the University of California, San Diego have unearthed the link between obesity and cancer of the colon. According to scientists, fat cells in the obese secrete a hormone called leptin, which induces growth of colon cancers.

Cancerous cells grow in the colon, rectum and appendix of sufferers. "The fact we have shown how leptin stimulates these cells means that drug companies may be in a better position to develop new treatments against the disease," explained the researchers.

The study is published in the British Journal of Surgery.
