Excessive Salt – Risk of Heart Disease and Stroke

by Medindia Content Team on Apr 10 2007 8:27 PM

Washington-A report published by the World Health Organization has reiterated the earlier warning about the enhanced risks of heart disease and stroke, with excessive consumption salt. The report has impressed upon governments world-wide to disseminate information about reduction in the consumption of sodium to 2,000 milligrams per day, 50% less than the present American consumption.

Since 1978, CSPI has been pressurizing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to adopt measures to cut down the salt content in processed and restaurant foods. This would entail an alteration in the regulatory status of salt - from a GRAS component to a food additive. Yet, the FDA had done precious little to reduce salt levels. Experts feel that by simply reducing the salt content in processed foods by half , nearly 150,000 lives could be saved in the U.S. annually.
