With a view to increasing the number of organ donors, Ontario’s health ministry is considering the plan of reimbursement of travel expenses and loss of pay to living donors. The health minister has promised to take a stand on this during spring.
British Columbia coughs up nearly $5,500 as expense for people who go the extra mile to donate their organs. With this scheme, nearly 43 living donors have been reimbursed their expenses.
According to the Ontario’s health minister, most people are in queues waiting for kidneys or livers. The best strategy to tide over this problem is to motivate more living donors.
Financial assistance for living donors is need of the hour as many forgo their wages during surgery and recovery period. This strategy of reimbursement of wages and travel expenses to living donors would inspire them to donate without waiting for vacation time, which could save the lives of many critical patients.
